Why military weatherman are more Important than your local ones

It is important to know what the weather will be like on any given day. With just a quick check on the internet or your local news, you can determine if your uniform of the day is going to involve shorts or rain boots. And while knowing the weather back in States is helpful, it’s not like the success of a mission is hanging in the balance.
This is where the military weathermen come into play. Whether it’s to determine if conditions are suitable for aircraft or for delicate SEAL operations, military meteorologists play an essential role.

Braving the Eye of the Storm: Research from drone penetration of hurricane eyewall published

The most dangerous part of the hurricane is the eye-wall close to the ocean. It’s where the storm draws energy from heat in the water, which influences how strong – and how quickly – the storm will develop. It’s also where the strongest winds lurk.
Direct and continuous observations of the lower eye-wall would help forecasters understand critical information about the storm’s development. NOAA P-3 “Hurricane Hunters” routinely fly through hurricane eyewalls to gather storm data, but avoid flying close to the ocean because conditions are too hazardous.

NASA Team Aids Hurricane Forecasting Using Satellite Data

NASA has for years used its cutting-edge space-based and airborne instruments to better understand hurricanes and give weather forecasters new insights they could use to improve the accuracy of their storm forecasts. A NASA program focused on bringing new weather research to bare on forecasting challenges is now tackling predictions of a hurricane’s strength.

Urban Drone Flights Over Kosovo Offer Rare Insights

To support safe drone deliveries and “air taxi” flights over cities, Embry-Riddle researchers recently leveraged a small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) to map atmospheric conditions close to the Earth’s surface – a project believed to be the first of its kind.
The study, offering a rare opportunity to fly drones through “urban canyons” such as building-lined streets, probably would have been impossible in busy U.S. cities, said Dr. Kevin Adkins, associate professor of aeronautical science. Embry-Riddle students were able to capture atmospheric measurements using an eight-motor “octocopter” drone (the DJI S1000), thanks to a study abroad trip in Kosovo, where urban areas are sparsely populated as a result of war in the 1990s.

NOAA upgrades the U.S. global weather forecast model (GFS)

NOAA’s flagship weather model — the Global Forecast System (GFS) — is undergoing a significant upgrade today to include a new dynamical core called the Finite-Volume Cubed-Sphere (FV3). This upgrade will drive global numerical weather prediction into the future with improved forecasts of severe weather, winter storms, and tropical cyclone intensity and track.

Poker Flat celebrating 50th anniversary with open house

FAIRBANKS — The personnel at Poker Flat Research Range are no strangers to giving tours, but Saturday the facility will be opening some of its doors to the public for the first time as part of the range’s 50th anniversary.

The laser lab, telemetry building and science operations center on the upper range will all be part of an open house in Chatanika at Mile 30 Steese Highway.

“So, we’re opening up all of those science-type facilities for the first time for the 50th,” said Range Manager Kathe Rich, “and that’s why we’re doing it at night also, just in case it’s clear — that you know, with a little luck, we’ll have an aurora make an appearance.”

Rich supervises the crew working at the range, as well as various operations in the area. She helped prepare for countless launch seasons by coordinating with the Bureau of Land Management, Native corporations and various state agencies. She hopes the open house will allow people to see more of what takes place at Poker Flat.

NOAA is about to make some big changes to its global weather model

The use of an FV3 core should allow for a more computationally efficient model.

The nation’s weather and climate organization, NOAA, has appointed a new director of its Environmental Modeling Center. This position essentially oversees development of the US computer models used to forecast weather around the world. The new director is Brian Gross, who fortunately has extensive experience in the field, having worked at NASA and led NOAA’s prestigious Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.
Gross becomes the full-time leader of NOAA’s modeling center at a critical time. The organization is about to substantially change the dynamic core, or engine, of its primary weather model—the Global Forecast System. This GFS model provides the foundation of many, if not most, seven- and 10-day forecasts that consumers see on their weather apps or in the nightly news. It also provides critical forecasts for hurricane tracks and other significant weather around the world.

Army Scientists create new technique for modeling turbulence in the atmosphere

Army researchers have designed a computer model that more effectively calculates the behavior of atmospheric turbulence in complex environments, including cities, forests, deserts and mountainous regions. This new technology could allow Soldiers to predict weather patterns sooner using the computers at hand and more effectively assess flight conditions for aerial vehicles on the battlefield.

Should Cities Embrace Their Heat Islands as Shields from Extreme Cold?

The higher temperature in cities relative to their rural surroundings, known as the urban heat island (UHI), is one of the most well documented and severe anthropogenic modifications of the environment. Heat islands are hazardous to residents and the sustainability of cities during summertime and heat waves; on the other hand, they provide considerable benefits in wintertime.
